BIOGRAPHY
Jason Brooks was born on 23 February 1969 in London, and grew up in Brighton, England where he now lives with his wife Nila, and two children. He began drawing and painting avidly as a small boy and was particularly inspired by a formative trip to The Uffizi Gallery at age 6, where he became enthralled by Renaissance painting and sculpture. As a boy he was an avid collector of DC comics and Tintin Books, immersing himself in their cover art and visual language, and was also fascinated by the drawings of Saul Steinberg, David Hockney and Pablo Picasso. In his early teens he received his first freelance commissions, drawing maps and making illustrations for windsurfing companies, another early passion. His parents are both artists ,who consistently encouraged his inate obsession with drawing and making pictures.
After A levels in Art, History of Art, Geography and English, Jason went on to graduate with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from St Martins College in London in the 1990’s, another highly formative experience, where he began working regularly for British Vogue after winning the Vogue Sotheby’s Cecil Beaton Award for Fashion Illustration. With British Vogue he gained valuable experience of answering briefs and seeing his work in print each month in a range of media. Vogue went on to publish over 50 of his illustrations while he was still in his early 20’s and he was the first to publish digital illustrations in its pages.
While at St Martin’s School of Art, Jason began travelling widely, filling colourful travel sketchbooks with drawings, painting, notes, and collages. He won a bursary from Thames Television and further award as the best of the bursaries that year, for a project exploring Mayan archaeological sites across Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. This was followed by trips with his sketchbooks to Morocco, Kenya Italy, Portugal, the South of France, New York and across Europe and travel has continued to be a recurrent theme and passion. Living in the Portobello and Notting Hill area of London in the 1990’s was also a formative time for his aesthetic style to develop.
After completing a Masters Degree in Illustration at the Royal Collage of Art in London, Jason was commissioned to illustrate several seasons of the Paris Couture Shows for the Independent Newspaper and illustrated reports from London and New York fashion weeks for Elle and Visionaire. He also created his first advertising campaign for Faberge perhaps the first to feature digital fashion illustration, and continued working with magazines including The Face, Vogue, Elle and World of Interiors. At this time he also illustrated a pioneering series of glossy flyers for cult London club, Pushca, and subsequently began designing and illustrating album covers for record label Hedkandi, selling in excess of 6 million albums. These experiences provided an education and foundation for his later career, and alongside being a professional artist he sees himself as a lifelong student of art.
Jason is particularly noted as being among the first fashion illustrators to embrace and pioneer computer technology in his field. The glamorous and aspirational world he presents in his work is a combination of life experience and imagination, and has provided a means of communication for a wide range of luxury and lifestyle brands.
Jason’s first book, Paris Sketchbook was published in 2013 and began a series of colourful travel journals depicting different cities around the world. Its follow up, London Sketchbook , was published in Spring 2015, and went on to win the V&A Museum Book Illustration award in 2016, the following year ‘New York Sketchbook’ completed the ‘City Sketchbook’ trilogy. All were conceived, written, researched and illustrated by Jason, an rewarding project that has enriched his repertoire of styles, and archive of images.
Each year Jason works closely with clients and luxury brands around the world, delivering professional, diverse and successful projects.
Jason Brooks artwork continues to evolve in style, range and technique.
